Bodø Kulturhus & Library
2009 - Bodø, Norway
Performing Arts & Library Competition
with Touraine Richmond Architects, SMEP by Buro Happold
For the new cultural complex, proposed was a form of accumulation at the city's marine edge, as opposed to a conventional landmark. Part mineral, part animal, part water, part land, part object, art ambience, the building activates and magnetizes the flow of people and events along the waterfront. The project roof and access provide an experiential link between the natural landscape ad the urban path. Stamped, weathered steel panels with "barnacle patterns" and waffle shapes for structural stiffness clad the entire building envelope. Within these panels, glazed openings create a pixelated pattern at the urban scale. The exceptional location north of the Arctic Circle provides distinct and unusual opportunities. The facility will be either under- or over-exposed to the sun most of the year. A reversible heat pump takes advantage of the year-round temperature differential between sea and air to sustainably condition the building year-round.
